Special Committee on the Arab World
SI Special Committee meeting, Crete 28-29 October 2011
The newly established SI Special Committee on the Arab World will convene on the island of Crete on 28-29 October, hosted by the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, PASOK. This gathering will bring together SI member parties and multiple actors from the region who are at the forefront of efforts to bring democratic change to the Arab world.
Building on the discussions held at the last Council, the main theme of the discussions will be “For a new society of rights and freedoms: winning the transition to democracy in the Arab world”, with an agenda comprising four points: 1) The challenges and opportunities of the transition: the different scenarios; 2) Defining common approaches and objectives from within the movements for change; 3) Empowering the new actors and transforming old institutions; and 4) What role for social democracy? Defining the message from within the region and a programme for action.
